WHEN ONE SPELLING HAS TWO VOICES
Why one name can have more than one Korean spelling
A written name can travel across languages while keeping the same Roman spelling. When its pronunciation changes, the most faithful Korean spelling changes too. More than one answer can therefore be correct.
Language changes the pronunciation
Names such as Gabriel, David, Andrea, and Charlotte are used in many languages. Their vowels, stress, and consonants may differ substantially between English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Italian, and other traditions.
Families may use a personal pronunciation
A pronunciation dictionary can document common forms, but the individual remains the best authority on their own name. A family’s pronunciation may differ from the most common form in a country.
How the finder handles disagreement
BARAM KOREA keeps distinct language records and can show documented pronunciation variants with their corresponding Hangul spellings. When evidence is insufficient, the name is held for review or the user is invited to record the pronunciation.
