How English names are written in Korean
English names are written in Korean by approximating their spoken sounds with Korean syllables. Silent letters, reduced vowels, stress, and regional pronunciation all matter more than the visual spelling of the name.
Letters do not map one to one
Korean does not assign one fixed Hangul character to every English letter. The letter c may sound like k or s, and vowel letters can represent several different sounds. A letter-by-letter converter therefore produces unreliable results.
Korean syllables may add a vowel
Many English consonant clusters and final consonants cannot be reproduced in exactly the same shape in Korean. A short supporting vowel may appear so that the name fits natural Korean syllable structure.
English is not one pronunciation
American, British, Irish, Australian, and other English varieties may pronounce the same spelling differently. Family usage can differ as well. When reliable pronunciations conflict, a careful name finder should show the alternatives instead of presenting one answer as universal.
