How to write your name in Korean
A personal name is usually written in Korean by representing the way it is pronounced—not by replacing each Roman letter with a Korean character. The best spelling begins with the voice of the person who owns the name.
1. Say the name before spelling it
Roman spelling does not always reveal pronunciation. The same written name may sound different across countries, languages, and families. Choose the language in the finder that best matches the pronunciation you use.
2. Match sounds to Korean syllable blocks
Hangul groups consonants and vowels into square syllable blocks. A name is divided by sound, and each part is represented with the closest natural Korean syllable. This is why the number of Korean blocks may differ from the number of letters in the original name.
3. Check established and preferred usage
Public figures and families may already use an established Korean spelling. When a person states a preferred pronunciation or spelling, that preference should take priority over a mechanical conversion.
4. Treat the result as a pronunciation guide
A Korean spelling helps Korean readers approximate the name. It does not translate the meaning of the name and cannot reproduce every sound from every language exactly.
